a mile a day keeps the doctor away (of running, that is)

We all know the saying “A mile a day keeps the doctor away”. It refers to running, of course, which is one of the most popular cardio workouts in the world, if not the most popular.
What is the big deal with running? What is it good for?
Running is a workout that brings your entire body into the action, it incorporates the upper body as well as the lower one. It is usually very intensive and can help you burn a lot of calories in a short time. When you compare it to other workouts such as using the elliptical machine, for example, you see that running gets the job done in terms of weight loss much better in a lot less time.
Running improves the cardiovascualr system and helps you get leaner. It can also be a great relaxation exercise to get you to put all the daily troubles behind you for a day.
Running can make any workout much more effective and can be done practically anywhere, indoors or outdoors with hardly any equipment. I could call it the “poor man workout” but it’s so great that this term may not do it justice.
Running a mile a day may not keep the doctor away forever, but it can certainly help you remain lean, reduce risk of various health issues, get you into the open air, and make you feel better.
Some tips for great running are to run uphill, do intervals, spring toward the end of your workout, wear comfortable shoes, and change your route every now and then. Other than that, just go ahead and run like the wind.
